Recap: Amy tried to explain NFTs to Zack but to no avail.

They sat back down at the dining table and immediately Amy turned on her laptop, launched Chrome and searched for “Beeple NFT”, leaving the apple pie on the table. Zack on the other hand dug in right away. He is the one with a sweet tooth.

The first result shown on Amy’s laptop was titled “Beeple sold an NFT for $69 million.” Amy didn’t click on the link but went straight to the image tab. There, it showed pictures of a collage. A colourful one but one couldn’t tell what it was about. The other pictures are weird digital arts, like a Mickey Mouse emerging from a doll head, a baby Yoda in an eggshell, a tree growing out of containers on a platform, a giant bull carrying a huge coin, a Pikachu head half-covered in guts, and huge statue featuring muscular Elon riding on a huge Shiba Inu with a trophy in his right hand.

Zack pointed to the collage and said, “This one here sold for almost 70 million US dollars? That’s crazy! What is so special about this digital art? Anybody can view it from the internet and download it as well. It looks messy to me. I can’t tell what it is. Why would someone pay top dollars for it?”

Amy stood up, looked a bit angry and talked with a higher pitch, “You can view Mona Lisa on the browser and download it as well, does it make you the owner? You can probably get a printed copy in some corner of the world and hang it up in your office but that doesn’t mean you own the original copy. And what do you mean why would someone pay top dollars for it? Do you mean it doesn’t worth that much? Do you know how much effort an artist put into creating their masterpieces? It is his baby! His babies in this case. Do you know that he consistently created a piece of digital art a day for the past 13 years and put them together to make this “messy” piece? 13 years! 5000 days! That’s why his work is valuable. It is not just a messy collage of 5000 pieces of digital art. It is a demonstration of will and grit.”

Amy paced back and forth across the dining room as she continued talking, “I have been drawing and painting for more than 10 years now and have made a living out of it. Are you questioning the value of my works? We artists spent time perfecting our skills just like you spent all those years perfecting your skills combing through numbers. Just because you work in a big company and have a nice office with a good view, means your skills are more valuable? Unbelievable!” Amy leaned herself against the kitchen top, with folding arms.

By this time, Zack has finished his apple pie. He stood up right after Amy finished talking, walked toward her, wrapped his arms around her and said, “The apple pie was delicious. Thank you, honey,” and gave her a peck. He did it so smoothly, didn’t skip a beat, like a dancer performing a move that he has practised hundreds of times on stage.

“Really?” Amy responded with a big smile on her face. She is easily distracted, but soon she realizes she has fallen into Zack’s trick. “Wait, I was talking about my work. Don’t you pull your tricks on me again.”

“Of course, I appreciate your works. Don’t you remember how we met?” Zack said. Amy smiled and nodded her head. “It’s Friday night, our movie night. Let’s get some cheese and crackers to go with the wine while watching a movie. We will talk more about whatever token again tomorrow.”

“Alright! I will get the cheese and crackers, and you go choose a movie. Cheddar and Gouda?” asked Amy. She was chirping again. “Both,” Zack responded with raised eyebrows.

After about 10 minutes, Amy walked into the movie room with the cheese and crackers. They have a small playroom where they watch movies, listen to music and play video games. There are only 2 bean bags on the floor and a small coffee table in between.

Amy put the plate with cheese and crackers on the coffee table and sat in the bean bag to its right. “What movie did you choose?”

“Let’s watch The Matrix again, shall we? Netflix has just listed them, and the new episode is coming soon. It is time for a refresher before we watch the new episode.” Said Zack while clicking on the play button. The movie started.

“Great choice!” Amy sank herself into the bean bag.

The classic ringtone was playing.

“Yeah.”

“Is everything in place?”
